The Department of English at S.A. College of Arts & Science organized the Valedictory of the Literary Association, The Renaissance, along with a warm farewell for the 2K23 batch on March 20, 2026, at the SACAS Theatre. The event was filled with emotions, joy, and cherished memories.

The President of The Renaissance presented a detailed report on the activities and achievements of the association, highlighting a successful year. A special video clip featuring faculty members who had left the college deeply touched everyone present. Both teachers and students shared their heartfelt experiences, making the moment even more meaningful.

The Head of the Department honored sports and cultural achievers of the academic year with tokens of appreciation. The juniors added charm to the event by presenting delightful dance and music performances, creating a joyful atmosphere.

The program concluded on an emotional note, celebrating bonds, achievements, and unforgettable moments.

College of Arts & Science, through its theatre club The Na Va Ra Saa, organized a captivating performance of Nala & Damayanti under the theme “Theatre in IKS” on March 20, 2026, at the SACAS Theatre. The event beautifully showcased the talent and dedication of BA English students, who brought the classic story to life with impressive acting, expressive dialogue delivery, and graceful stage presence.

The highlight of the event was the presence of guest speaker Mr. S. Aravinth, Actor and Creator. He shared valuable insights on live arts, emphasizing the importance of expression, timing, and connection with the audience. He also spoke about his journey in theatre, acting, and content creation, inspiring students with practical tips and real-life experiences.

The event was engaging and enriching, leaving the audience with a deeper appreciation for theatre and storytelling.

The Department of English at S.A. College of Arts & Science, in association with The Renaissance, hosted its second conclave, “Beyond Words: A Celebration of Language and Literature,” on March 18, 2026, at the SACAS Preview Theatre. The event began with an invocation and welcome address by the Head of the Department, followed by the introduction and felicitation of distinguished speakers.

Dr. K. Kanthimathi’s session emphasized how language shapes identity and can empower through inclusivity. Ms. Sherly Hephzibah highlighted the role of storytelling in shaping human thought and emotions. Post-break sessions featured Ms. G. Nithya Priya, who demonstrated the significance of sign language as a unique linguistic system, and Mr. Sethu Darwin, who explored the connection between literature and theatre.

Each session included interactive discussions, encouraging student participation. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, leaving attendees inspired and enriched by a deeper appreciation of language and literature.

The Department of English, S.A. College of Arts & Science, successfully organized an International Workshop titled “The Art and Science of Storytelling” on 18 February 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the SACAS Theatre. The workshop brought together faculty members and students for an engaging and intellectually stimulating session that highlighted the power of storytelling in communication.

The programme featured eminent speakers including Mr. John Row, Storyteller, Poet and Public Speaker (England), and Dr. Neena Gayatri, Co-Founder and COO of ACEnovation Pvt. Ltd.. The speakers shared valuable insights on blending creativity with structured communication, emphasizing the art and science behind impactful storytelling.

Through interactive discussions and practical examples, participants gained a deeper understanding of narrative techniques, audience engagement, and persuasive communication. The workshop proved to be inspiring and enriching, encouraging students to harness storytelling as a powerful tool for academic and professional excellence.

 

Mastering the News Desk: Workshop on News Reading Conducted at SACAS

The Department of English, S.A. College of Arts & Science, in association with The Renaissance, successfully organized the workshop titled “Mastering the News Desk: A Workshop on News Reading” on 18 February 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at the SACAS Theatre. The session witnessed active participation from faculty members and students.

The workshop was conducted by K. Shantharam, M.A. English, Anchor and News Reader at Mega TV. Drawing from his professional experience in broadcast journalism, he provided practical training in news reading techniques, voice modulation, pronunciation clarity, script handling, and on-camera confidence.

The session proved to be highly interactive and informative. Participants gained valuable insights into media communication and professional presentation skills. The workshop effectively enhanced students’ understanding of newsroom practices and inspired many to explore opportunities in the field of media and journalism.

Mastering the Mic: Learning the Art of Anchoring at SACAS.

The Department of English, S.A. College of Arts & Science, organised a skill-building workshop titled “The Art of Anchoring: A Skill-Building Workshop” on 28 January 2026 at the SACAS Theatre. The programme was designed to equip students with effective communication skills, confidence, stage presence, and professional anchoring techniques essential for public speaking and media-related careers. The workshop aimed to help students understand anchoring as both an art and a valuable career skill.

The session was led by Mr. K. Shantharam, a renowned Anchor and News Reader from Mega TV. The workshop was formally inaugurated with the Lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, the resource person was introduced and felicitated by the Head of the Department, Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran.

In his address, Mr. K. Shantharam spoke on voice modulation, clarity of speech, body language, audience engagement, and confidence building. An interactive session allowed students to clarify doubts and explore career opportunities in anchoring. The workshop ended with a Vote of Thanks and the National Anthem, making the workshop a meaningful and inspiring learning experience.

The Bookmark Readers’ Club Meeting Highlights Indian Knowledge Systems at SACAS

The Department of English organised the sixth meeting of The Bookmark, the Readers’ Club, in association with the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) on 24 December 2025 at the Digital Library of S. A. College of Arts & Science. The programme focused on strengthening reading habits, enhancing literary appreciation, and developing critical thinking skills among students.

The session featured brief presentations on selected literary works rooted in Indian Knowledge Systems, reflecting India’s rich intellectual, cultural, and philosophical traditions. Participants discussed themes, characters, and perspectives from diverse genres, followed by interactive open discussions that encouraged critical engagement and interpretative thinking.

The meeting also provided a platform for faculty and students to share their reading experiences, fostering a vibrant culture of dialogue and collaborative learning. The discussions enabled participants to draw connections between texts and contemporary contexts.

The programme aligned with SDG 4: Quality Education, promoting inclusive and lifelong learning through literary engagement. The session was well received and effectively reinforced the Readers’ Club’s mission of nurturing a sustained interest in reading and reflective literary analysis.

Unlocking the Magic of Words: Translation Workshop at SACAS.

The Department of English at S.A.College of Arts & Science,  hosted a lively translation workshop titled “3D: Decode, Deliver, Delight” on August 14, 2025, at the Preview Theatre from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.

Dr. Y. John Ilavarasu, Assistant Professor, was the guest speaker. He explained the importance of translation, its principles, and common mistakes with simple, real-life examples.

Fun activities like Decode the Idioms, Emoji Translation Game, Scrambled Words, and a Translation Challenge made the session engaging and educational. Dr. Ilavarasu shared that translation is not easy—it requires creativity and clear understanding.

The event was organised under the guidance of Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran, Head of the Department, and Ms. S. Vaishnavi, President of The Renaissance.

The session was both fun and informative, leaving students with a new appreciation for the art of translation.

A Grand Start: "The Art of Arts" Orientation Programme Welcomes Freshers with Joy and Inspiration at SACAS.

The Department of English at S.A. College of Arts & Science hosted “The Art of Arts”, an Orientation and Freshers' Fiesta 2K25, on August 2 at the auditorium. The event began with Tamilthai Vazhthu and lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, wishing light and knowledge for the year ahead.

Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran, Head of the Department, welcomed everyone and introduced the Chief Guest, Dr. P. Beena, Associate Professor, SDNB Vaishnav College for Women. In her speech, Dr. Beena spoke about the power of language, the importance of communication, reskilling, equality, and success in English literature studies.

The day also saw the launch of the literary association “The Renaissance” and seven student clubs including The Bookmark, The Na Va Ra Saa, The Brainwave, The Hypothesis, The Coffee House, Alumni Insight Series, and Electoral Literacy Club.

The programme ended with a lively Freshers' Fiesta full of music, dance, and games, warmly welcoming the new students.

The Department of English at S.A. College of Arts & Science successfully conducted the sixth meeting of its Readers’ Club, The Bookmark, on July 17, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Digital Library. The session aimed to nurture reading habits, literary appreciation, and critical thinking among students.

Ms. R. Divya, the club coordinator, welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of reading in shaping young minds. Mr. Thanga Kumaran, Head of the Department of English, also shared a thought-provoking story and highlighted the significance of listening as a key element of literary engagement and communication.

Faculty members shared personal reading experiences, setting an inspiring tone for the session. Each participant presented a summary of their favorite literary work, discussing key themes, characters, and the impact it had on them.

The Department of English at S.A. College of Arts & Science hosted the Valediction of the Literary Association – The Renaissance and a heartfelt Farewell for the Batch 2K22 on April 8, 2025, at 12:00 PM in the SACAS English Hall. The event beautifully celebrated the achievements of the outgoing students and marked the formal closure of the Literary Association’s activities for the academic year.

With the theme “Every farewell is a sunset that always awaits the sunrise,” the program reflected warmth, nostalgia, and hope. Ms. S. Vaishnavi, President of The Renaissance, led the proceedings with enthusiasm and elegance. The event was graced by Dr. Malathi Selvakkumar (Principal), Dr. V. Sayi Satyavathi (Director), Mr. M. Thanga Kumaran (Head of the Department), and Mr. P. Venkatesh Raja (Correspondent).

The ceremony was a perfect blend of celebration and emotion, leaving behind cherished memories.
